Debate on Convergence

  • Due to convergence in the cultural and creative industries, some traditional media are tending to lose its stance in the industry.
  • These are some main traditional media that are bound to be discarded and rather lose their relevance due to convergence;-Video Cassette Recorders, Compact Discs and players, Newspapers, Televisions. Radios. All these media devices listed above would change due to convergence for a single reason precisely-The Internet.
  • Technological advancement has taken over the media to the fullest whereby every aspect of conveying information to the general mass can be fitted into a device as applications. For example, the new devices carry a range of useful and handy applications. If you have an internet-ready laptop, you need not get any of the components listed above.
  •  In all, the media is tending to be internet based. More also, convergence will make London a more multicultural and creative city in the sense that you can learn about different cultures and art through the internet or other technological devices and more also, you can showcase your art and talent more efficiently through the internet. For example, due to convergence, a more multicultural target can be reached through convergent media. An advert for the Chinese New Year is more likely to be seen by more people on their mobile internet devices than television and newspapers.
  • Convergence in the Creative and Cultural industries will not encourage segregation but create awareness and impact knowledge of other cultures. From my own perspective, the internet creates the ease and accessibility to other people’s cultures. For instance, having iTunes radio provides the ease and accessibility to actually explore world music from the comfort of your home. Nowadays, music is a click away.
